Emery Lawson was on the path to follow her dad’s footsteps. Going pro in surfing had always been the plan. The dream.
Until it wasn’t.
Now, at nineteen, everyone thinks Emery is done surfing and, aside from two of her best friends, no one knows the truth. Emery hasn’t stopped surfing. What was once her dream is now her little secret.
But if she wants to go pro, that secret is going to have to come out.
Twenty-two-year-old Sebastian “Bash” Cleaton has worked hard to get to where he is. For eight years he’s never had a day off, never taken a vacation. He is the best in his sport for a reason. But the passion that once drove him to chase the waves is missing. And Bash—Bash is tired.
When he escapes for a recharge in a small beach town, he never expects to crash into a girl who introduces him to a new life.
Secrets, hardships, and relationships come out of this debut tale of starting over and never letting go of your dreams.
I had been really looking forward to the opportunity to read this book. As a blogger receiving an advanced copy, it was an honor to be picked.
But then the book was pushed back a month.
And then another month.
And I get it. I do. Authors want to put out their best possible work.
So ... I kept saying "well, it'll be so good! I'll love it" ... and I didn't. I know that I shouldn't take these things into consideration, really, but I do. I had read the blurb and wanted to get my hands on it and when it I did, I just ... realized it wasn't for me.
I did really enjoy the hero's struggles - both personally and professionally. But I didn't like the heroine. She was snarky, rude, and secretive without much a good reason. I understand what happened to her was traumatic but her reasoning for keeping her "secrets" was legitimately stupid. When she revealed it, I rolled my eyes so hard. I was like "but you claim to be an adult when you're acting like a juvenile ..."
But I LOVED the hero. I loved his struggle. I loved his escape. I love how he handled the heroine and his issues. He was such a fantastic part of this book and I wish I could have liked the female character half as much as I liked him.
Anyway, I have some very mixed emotions on this one.
Three stars.
