Polly Doyle hates her job, her life, and being stuck in her home town. Being a twenty-something, newly single, phone-sex operator isn’t exactly where she saw herself on career day. When Polly lands a spot on the popular TV show, The Bake Off, she vows to win. Baking is her passion and her ticket out of Cavern's Bend. There’s just one, very big man-shaped problem. It’s couples year. Polly doesn’t want a man, but for the first time in her life, she needs one. Faking it for a living comes naturally to Polly. Faking The Bake Off, should be a piece of cake. If only her fake boyfriend wasn’t so edible, so hot, and so damn infuriating!

 Keane Marshall loves his job, his life, and moving back to his home town is the icing on the cake. Being a twenty-something, newly single chef of the hottest restaurant in Cavern’s Bend, is exactly where he wants to be. Until he gets roped into a competition with a woman he hoped he’d never see again. Polly Doyle was the first girl he ever wanted. The first girl he fell in love with. And the girl who sucker punched him into 6th grade infamy. Faking The Bake Off should be a piece of cake. If only his fake girlfriend wasn’t so sinfully spicy, so teeth tingling sweet, and so damn infuriating!

A spoonful of sugar, and a whole lot of spice.

Captain's Log :: Review

I had really wanted to read this book. The blurb sounded promising and interesting. I liked the concept of the reality show and the second-chance-ish romance between the characters.

But it fell flat for me.

After losing her mother, the heroine is in denial that she's experiencing depression. She's a sex-line operator by night and baker by day and she freaking hates her job. The only light at the end of her tunnel is that she's been granted permission to be on the reality bake-off show. The catch? She has to find a partner because unbeknownst to her, she applied for the couples edition.

When she catches her boyfriend cheating on her (after he belittles her by trying to be subtle about calling her unintelligent and only good for being a housewife), she befriends the woman he cheated with in a weird, kind of appropriate chain of events. It's through her that the heroine finds out that her life-long crush has come back to town because her new friend is his sister. What a coincidence.

Cut to the hero. He's loved the heroine for like freaking ever. So much so that he's the one that bought her mother's house when she needed the money. He's been charging her crap for rent in order for her to keep staying there because it's the only tie she has with her mom. He's grown up and made a name for himself and is planning to open a restaurant (which is only mentioned in the planning stages and we never see it operating) in their home town. He's been traveling the world and has always wanted to come back to this tiny little place in hopes that he can be with the heroine.

Anyway, a lot of stuff happens. The first time they have sex can only be described as completely unbelievable - and not in the good way - the progression of events was so horrible. I felt like their relationship was wholly unbelievable. It often felt forced and uncomfortable to me.

Despite their awkwardness, I really did like the premise. The heart of the story was strong. The reality show could have been played up a LOT more. That aspect is what really drew me in to begin with because I'm sucker for reality novels.

At the end of this, I'm giving this book 3 stars. It had so much potential.
