I was warned about Tristan Cole.

“Stay away from him,” people said.
“He’s cruel.”
“He’s cold.”
“He’s damaged.”

It’s easy to judge a man because of his past. To look at Tristan and see a monster.

But I couldn’t do that. I had to accept the wreckage that lived inside of him because it also lived inside of me.

We were both empty.
We were both looking for something else. Something more.
We both wanted to put together the shattered pieces of our yesterdays.

Then perhaps we could finally remember how to breathe.

Review:
With every Brittainy book, I fall a little more in love with her writing. Every book of hers I have read have left me feeling all the feelings. The Air He Breathes was no exception.

After losing her husband in an accident, Elizabeth is left to pick up the pieces. Their daughter, Emma, is young and is the only thing keeping Liz together. She moves away from her home and friends and stays with her mother, who is as unstable as they come. When she moves back home to work on accepting her loss, she meets Tristan.

Tristan has also lost his loved ones. His wife and son also died in an accident. He hit absolute rock bottom before becoming the town "asshole". Everyone says to steer clear of him. He's "scary" and "rude" and "an asshole". Really, he is just broken. He has never been able to 'recover' from his loss. He has written off all family and almost all friends.

They meet. Elizabeth refuses to give up on him even though he makes it clear that he doesn't want her around. The thing is she SEES him. She sees his pain, his grief, his loss. She gets it and understands him.

After butting heads, they eventually fall into some kind of sync. It works for them. They use each other to help stop missing their spouses. Tristan grows close to Emma and in a way, it helps him with missing his son.

The twist in this story gutted me. Totally gutted me. I'm not going to spoil it but man ... what a doozy! I loved it, though. I loved how all the pieces fit together.

My rating: 5 stars
Feelings: All of them. You may need tissues. I did.

I loved how this book spoke of so many difficult topics. Death. Suicide. Loss. Grief. Coping. Moving on with life.

I sincerely hope you check out this book. I would very, very highly recommend it.

Author Bio

Brittainy Cherry has been in love with words since the day she took her first breath. She graduated from Carroll University with a Bachelors Degree in Theatre Arts and a minor in Creative Writing. She loves to take part in writing screenplays, acting, and dancing--poorly of course. Coffee, chai tea, and wine are three things that she thinks every person should partake in! Brittainy lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her family. When she's not running a million errands and crafting stories, she's probably playing with her adorable pets.
